Chateau du Sureau

The Chateau du Sureau has been called one of the standout B & B's in all of California in the United States. If you like the European lavishness this as close as you can get on the west side of the Atlantic. The Chateau du Sureau is located outside the south end of Yosemite Park and a world away from the rest of Oakhurst. This 9,000-square-foot inn has an elegant, near-magical ambience to it, radiating from the villa that houses the stylish, uniquely decorated guest rooms, such as the extraordinary Saffron Room with a king-size ebony and ivory bedroom set from 1834, and the Sweet Geranium Room, with a private balcony overlooking sumptuous gardens and a canopied king bed. There are details both rustic and modern, and scads of impressive objects of art around every corner. The grounds here are similarly phenomenal -- featuring a lawn-size chessboard with 3-foot-high pawns! The restaurant, Erna's Elderberry House, has been described as sublime.

Chateau du Sureau is run by Erna Kubin-Clanin. Kubin-Clanin first opened her award-winning restaurant, Erna's Elderberry House, in 1984 and quickly realized she needed an Inn to accommodate the many out-of-town visitors. Construction on the ten-bedroom Château, adjacent to Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant, began in 1990. Named for the elderberry bushes that cover the rolling property, Château du Sureau was completed in 1991.
